Milestones

Zack keeps changing all the time, and most of the time, we're too busy trying to keep up with him to notice. Here are some of the things we've noticed lately:
- At a week shy of two months old, he's now wearing the 3-6 month old clothes. He's a big boy. We've moved up to size two diapers too.
- A couple of weeks ago, I had my first experience of changing his clothes just because he'd been in htem all day - not because they were soaked in some bodily fluid or another. Since then, we've had pretty good luck keeping him clean and dry all day.
- We're starting to establish a routine - a new outfit in the morning, a stroller walk in the afternoon, and a bedtime ritual. We have bathtime at 8 (he loves his bath now, and it breaks up the evening colic crying), then change him into pajamas and turn on the white noise machine, and he and I have some special snuggle time in bed until he drifts off. Lately, if he gets to sleep by 9:30 or so, he's usually up again at 10, 1-sh, 4-ish, and 7-ish. Once, he did 5 hours, though. We're still waiting for that to happen again.
- I think his hair is starting to come in a little more. It's starting to look like a very fine, very short crewcut, instead of like Kojak. He does have a lot of hair in the back, though. Business in front, party in the back.
- When I took him for a stroller ride the other day, two neighbours stoppped us to meet Zack and admire him. Both commented on his big blue eyes. They seem to be emerging as his defining feature (that and his BIG HEAD). Speaking of his big head, the sun hat we bought from Baby Gap is too small and he's only 8 weeks old. It just sits up on top of his head and the chin strap is too short. I got him a new sun hat for 6 to 18 month-olds today.
- He's getting better head control. I can prop him up in my lap now, facing out, and it's almost like he's sitting up. He seems to like lying back on me like that.
- You know how before, we could quiet him down by going into the bathroom with the fan on, or picking him up and walking around? Well, he's a smart kid. It escalates every day. Now, picking him up and walking won't work, but climbing the stairs will. Go figure. Sitting on the toilet with the fan won't work, but standing in the bathroom, bouncing your knees, with the fan on AND the shower running works. I get the feeling he's slowly training us to do crazier and crazier tricks. The townhouse is his own little Skinner box and we're the pigeons. (Or whatever lab animals you put in there).
- The smiles are still the best. I think they're sometimes more responsive too. Usually, though, he's just smiling all of sudden, and we don't know why, but it makes us all smile.

There's a lot to tell for such a little guy. My boss came to visit us yesterday afternoon, along with his wife and their 6 year old twins. It's pretty fun to show off Zackie, but he did start crying halfway through the visit and we took turns going into the bathroom with the fan on and yelling into the living room from there.
